Jaegyum: Hey Jaeyi, I was reading this story called "King Lear" for class. It's by Shakespeare.

Jaeyi: Shakespeare? Oh, like Romeo and Juliet? Is it a love story too?

Jaegyum: Not really. It's more about a king who has three daughters. He wants to divide his kingdom among them, but he decides to test who loves him the most.

Jaeyi: That sounds a bit silly. Can't he just decide?

Jaegyum: I know, right? So, he asks each of them to say how much they love him. The two older daughters, Goneril and Regan, say really over-the-top, unbelievable things about how much they adore him. But his youngest daughter, Cordelia, says she loves him "according to her bond, no more nor less," meaning she loves him as a daughter should, not with exaggerated flattery.

Jaeyi: So, he should have known she was the honest one.

Jaegyum: Exactly! But King Lear gets really angry with Cordelia for not flattering him and disinherits her. He gives his entire kingdom to the two older daughters.

Jaeyi: That sounds like a bad decision. What happens next?

Jaegyum: Well, it turns out Goneril and Regan are actually really cruel. Once they have the power, they start treating King Lear very badly. They take away his servants and show him no respect.

Jaeyi: Oh no! So the daughters who said they loved him the most were lying?

Jaegyum: Yep. And Cordelia, even though she was disinherited, still loves her father. She ends up in another country and comes back with an army to help him.

Jaeyi: Wow, that's intense! So, does everything work out in the end? Does King Lear realize he made a mistake?

Jaegyum: He does realize his mistake and understands who truly loved him. But the story is a tragedy, so things don't end happily for everyone. It's actually quite sad.

Jaeyi: That sounds like a complicated story. Maybe I should read it sometime.

Jaegyum: You should! It makes you think about how important it is to be honest and see people for who they really are, not just what they say.

Jaeyi: Yeah, I guess so. It's kind of like that time when Minho said he was my best friend so I'd share my snacks, but then he wouldn't play with me at recess.

Jaegyum: (laughs) Exactly! It's a bit like a bigger, more serious version of that.
